Blackwater Head Caravan & Camping Site
Blackwater
County Wexford
Ireland
Site visited September 2000
Blackwater Head is a hidden treasure, hence near impossible to find.
Location: Follow the brown signs off the coast road at Blackwater, north of Wexford and enquire at the beach car park shop! Its difficult to find, but worth the effort!
Fortunately every cloud has a silver lining.*(see editor note) Driving along the coast at 7.30pm and homeless, we stumbled across Blackwater Head. A more idyllic site and location is hard to imagine. Next to a static caravans site, but fully shielded from it, the touring caravan field is flat, close mown grass with about thirty clearly marked pitches. Full toilet, shower, dish-washing and chemical disposal facilities are modern and spotless, kept that way by each caravanner being given an access key. Best of all, the beautiful sandy beach can be seen from most pitches and is just twenty paces from the site entrance, where a small shop also serves the few day-trippers.
There was space available when we arrived late in the day, even in high season, suggesting this is a hidden treasure of a site. Just fifteen minutes north of Wexford, I recommend you visit when next in the area.

This spring we visited Southern Ireland and I feel I should provide feedback on our visit to the site.
I must report this is the most poorly organised site I have ever visited. Despite booking well in advance for a caravan, full awning and electric hook up, we were allocated a postage stamp piece of grass in the centre of a square of caravans, four pitches wide by five pitches deep, with no practical access. Arriving at 5.30pm, the space left for us was simply too small to fit both caravan and awning. Presumably planning regulations requiring minimum distances between caravans are different in Eire.
Complaint resulted in an alternative pitch on the end of a row. Whilst all the pitches are numbered and identified by concrete slabs, everyone had spread out along the row and space available (next to the overflowing rubbish skip) was twenty yards from the allocated pitch number. Even if our hook up lead had been long enough, the electric point was already full.
Our visit was in high season, so we realised crowding would be a problem. Out of season, the location next to the longest beach in Ireland may be ideal. The intolerable conditions we found, however, were simply the result of inadequate organisation by the owner. We met the owner, explained our concerns and left with a refund excluding our deposit.

Cost (2000): approx IE£8 for 2 adults - not sure if showers were included in the price.
All types of unit accepted. Open March to October.
Directions: From Rosslare Harbour, take the N25 towards Wexford for about 4 miles. Turn left just before Tagoat, SP Ladys Island/Carne. Continue for about 2 miles. At St Ivers Bar turn left. The site is on the left about 2 miles further on & is signposted.
This is a friendly site in a nice location and makes a good stopover for the ferries from Rosslare to Pembroke or Fishguard. It is not as easy to find as the directions suggest!
Pitches are all level and sectioned off with hedges. Some pitches have electric hook-ups, but there were a couple of non-electric areas when we were there which were ideal for tents. Its quite a small site, with one toilet block within easy reach of all pitches and the facilities were well maintained. Theres a small shop on site selling everyday needs, which is useful as there are no shops within walking distance.
Dogs and children are welcome on the site. The owners had just taken over when we visited in 2000 and were making a lot of renovations. They were very friendly and happy to help with information and advice.
The site is on the edge of a conservation area and is very quiet and peaceful. It is within a mile of a long, safe, sandy beach with some good dunes, and there is some good coastal walking to be had. People heading west often bypass this corner of Ireland, but there is quite a lot to do and see. Definitely worth a couple of nights stay.
