Gowerton Caravan Club Site--- Second report below

We chose Gowerton for our first visit to Wales on
location. We began to wonder if we had done the right thing, when we mentioned to anyone where we were going the response was the same, they said, " What are you going there for". We had serious doubts, until we got talking to Sally and Chris McCamley at Steamer Quay in the July of 96.
Gowerton is situated at the start of the Gower peninsular in South Wales, near to Swansea.
Lyn and I found the Welsh approach to entertainment
at their coastal resorts hard to accept. We had have been weaned
on a diet of hustle and bustle.
The site was good, the services were well placed and the toilet/shower block was clean and well designed (we have noticed that as we visit more and more sites, it becomes clear that most are of a standard design). Water in the showers was hot (easily adjusted) and constant.
Lyn and I dont think that we will return to Gowerton, not because of the site but because of its location, Wales.
Finding the site was easy. if you follow the CC directions.

The site is situated on the minor road which joins the B4295 and the A 484 just to the west of Gowerton.
Toilets and showers are, as expected, modern, spotless and with lashings of hot water. Drinking and waste water points are liberally distributed throughout the site, as are rubbish disposal points.
this lovely site at the entrance to the beautiful Gower Peninsula.

I approached the site from the North via Ebbw Vale, from the Head of the Vallies Road. A bit of a rough road through Ebbw Vale, but not too bad.
At Crumlin, turn right at the traffic lights, and over the bridge and straight ahead to second on the right clearly marked for the site, only problem was no one told me about the 12% incline which seemed like 25%, but after reaching 1st gear we made it.
Turned right as instructed with good sign posting to show the way, then left as sign-posted. all fine but the road from then
on (still climbing) was rather narrow and would not like to meet a unit coming the other way.
Found the site entrance. first problem 2 speed bumps that if not careful could easily cause you to hit bottom.
Reception clearly marked, and shown to site, second problem, there was a sharp rise of the track onto the concrete handstanding, and I did hit bottom. however handstanding was flat and level.
The pitch had its own water tap, easy electric hook up, and waste pipes straight into drain so no collection required on waste water.
Put up full awning although no other on site, Beautiful view, straight across the valley for about 5 to 10 miles, with tops
of other Mountains clearly visible, looking West.
Yes it is on top of a mountain or as near as dam it.
The site consists of 10 permanent holiday static vans, Approx 30 hard stand concrete pads, about 10 new in passed few months. All with electric hook up and drainage, although many were taken with permanent tourers chained to the concrete.
Second large area with a few hardstandings and electric hook-ups, but no drainage connections, ample room for about 50 units, this area also has a toilet block, as did ours, with disposal area etc, all in excellent condition and
Third field with room for at least another 50 units, no toilet block though, and another large area being prepared as extension.
Nice club, but no shop. Public phones on site.
Owners live on site in large house, quite impressive.
A good looking site for the summer, but we found out why the other vans were chained down, wind was not in it the site is very open with little or no protection from the south and west, and with the winds we encountered,
The rain started the day we arrived and just did not stop, turning the roads into rivers, and I mean rivers, but with good weather it should be quite nice. We even had snow.
There is also a play area for kids, and a storage compound with about 100 vans in it that was the only part really protected.
Cost for 3 + 1 infant (Not charged) with awning and electric hook up all at £14-00 per night.
I personally would not use the site again, as I am sure that there are better sites in the area at less cost.
I hope I have not board you all with this, but any questions, please ask
Keith

Sally was born in that area of Wales so was able to give us a more accurate description of what we should expect.
It proved to be a good base for exploring South Wales. The Gower Peninsular boasts some outstanding coastal areas, Wurms head, Southgate and the coastal walk to Three Cliffs Bay and the Brecon Beacons, are some that spring to mind.
Kidwelly and its Castle are well worth a visit, the sound tape
in the Sony Walkman, complete with sound effects, made the walk
around the castle special.
In English south coast resorts you can go for a walk in the evening along the front and browse around all the shops that stay open until 10.00. In Wales everywhere shuts at 6.00!
The general appearance of the site was good, clean and free of litter, a standard feature of CC sites.
There was another factor that swayed me to this way of thinking, the
feeling that the English were not welcome in Wales, I was glad to get out of Swansea, when we gone in to do some shopping, due to the intimidation that I felt while in the main shopping centre. The locals seemed to be able to tell that we were outsiders, almost as if we had English written across our foreheads.
It is the ideal base from which to explore the Gower. At another time with better weather, Lyn and I might have found the place more enjoyable.

All the pitches on the site appear to be billiard table level and there is a fair spread of hedges and trees to give the site a comfortable, intimate atmosphere. The grass is cut very short and collected as it is cut, so that there is no fear of traipsing a load of cuttings into the caravan, tent or motorhome. The dog walk is worth a visit, even without a dog, as it is a maze-like area with mown paths between high stands of pampas type grass and reeds and, it covers a fairly large area.
On the roads, there is the mandatory one-way system, common to most club sites, but, it works very well and is not a problem.
Our impression was of a very pleasant site, which we would be happy to re-visit.
To strike one small but critical note, during the day the presence of the A484 nearby as well as the railway between Swansea and the west coast, did tend to be rather noisy, but at night, the road quietened down and the frequency of trains was far less. All in all, it didnt spoil our stay on

cleaned out thoroughly daily.
sleepless nights, wonder whether we were taking of or not, but the awning stood up very well and we kept everything intact, although I still wonder how, must of put the awning (which took the main blast) up perfectly.
